FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY
Forensic odontology is located at the border between odontology and forensic medicine. Forensic investigation of odontological evidence is performed by forensic odontologists on request and in close collaboration with forensic pathologists and the judiciary system. This paper gives an overview of the main focus areas of forensic odontology and introduces the subsequent papers reviewing selected forensic odontology topics: “Age estimation by means of the teeth and jaws”, “Bite mark analysis”, “International standards form Mass disaster victim identification (DVI)”, “Will DNA analysis make forensic identification redundant - or has it already done so?”, “Forensic dental identification; three case reports”. Further, it is described how to get more information about postgraduate courses in forensic odontology.
