Orofaciale smerter – fra symptom til neurodegenerativ sygdom
Kan smerte være andet end et symptom på vævsbeskadigelse og måske blive til en sygdom i sig selv? Den seneste viden om smertens neurobiologi præsenteres i denne oversigtsartikel, og der gennemgås kort fire forskellige typer af smerte: den nociceptive, den inflammatoriske, den neuropatiske og den funktionelle smerte. Endvidere fremhæves hjernens rolle for den kliniske præsentation af smerte samt de muligheder, der i dag er til stede for at undersøge kompleksiteten af smerten.
Orofacial pain – from symptom to neurodegenerative disease: Pain is traditionally considered a symptom associated with tissue lesions but can pain in fact transform into a disease in its own right? The most recent knowledge in the field of the neurobiology of pain is presented in this short update with emphasis on four types of pain: nociceptive, inflammatory, neuropathic and functional types of pain. In addition, the crucial importance of the brain for the clinical manifestations of pain is discussed and the current possibilities for the investigation of the complexity of pain are presented.
